A couple of weeks ago, I attended a presentation on the Internet of Things geared toward industrial and commercial building applications. Having worked with a client who creates IoT products, I was more than aware the technology, but I learned far more about how these devices are underutilized (and why).
In the course of the presentation, the architect mentioned how these IoT technologies don’t often “talk” to one another because they’re closed-loop systems. “Hopefully” they will talk to one another someday, he said (though I’m paraphrasing).
It was in his “hopefully” that I took a pause.
I thought, surely someone is working to connect all of these devices to one another?
But what if there isn’t anyone working on this problem?
Or what if the solutions that are available to connect these connected systems are too expensive or difficult to use?
I decided at that moment to take note each time someone says the word “hopefully” because there is likely a product or service to create. There is opportunity to be found in the “hopefully.”
Acting on the “Hopefully”
Let’s say that you’ve stumbled across an opportunity…something that truly sparks your interest and meets the needs of others.
The scary part can be the decision to take massive action. I know, I’ve been there.
Recently, I sent 55 emails related to a project I’m working in, the details of which I’ll be sharing this month. This was a huge moment for me because I sat on this opportunity for months before I proceeded. I was fully prepared to push the button and I kept convincing myself that it wasn’t the time for this project.
In reality, I was afraid. The decision to take massive action resulted in fear and kept me from actually taking action.
I ended up sending the emails and the results were better than expected. Imagine that. 😉
I’ve taken away a valuable lesson: it’s not enough to recognize the opportunity. Every new opportunity will probably be a little scary at first, but I can’t be governed by fear of the unknown. Otherwise, I’d still be working a desk job.
If you can start working on something new today that excites you, try to take a small step in that direction. There is someone who will benefit from the action you take today and that person will never know you were a little bit afraid today (unless you write a blog post like this and tell people).
